I like to watch this show to escape the reality that is so shitty right now. I was super confused too because up to this point in the series the Earths Timeline has been pretty laid out. I thought it was a lot of fun and had some seriously great performances (despite that unbearable old lady) as well as being well directed and having some great dialogue. Agree with most of the above but what's with that thumb sucking goodbye? I figure my expectations are pretty low at this point. It was essentially Doctor Who as a big dumb action movie. Additionally, I thought the Doctor couldn't change his/her timeline, so by going there it would seem like it would cause it to be a fixed point in time. Also, did the TARDIS translation circuits just...stop working or something? The thing is: I don't disagree with a lot of negative opinions on here. Orphan 55. spoiler. Still. The more subtle initial talk about what an Orphan planet is was all that was needed for good sci fi. I like that Ed Hime in both his episodes has given Ryan more personality than normal by portraying him as socially awkward. When I first watched it, my reaction was generally positive. This felt like it came out of the blue for me, and thus for the first time the message annoyed me. But other than a few small problems I felt that the characters were interesting and the opening scene where Ryan gets infected is hilarious. It wasn't perfect. Lecturing to the camera about how our current society is bad is simply not good sci fi and added nothing to the plot, in fact it distracted from the plot. This felt like it came out of the blue for me, and thus for the first time the message annoyed me. Like maybe a first part ending with finding the sign showing they were on earth, it would have been an interesting cliff hanger. Another big issue I had was the ending. save hide report. So many issues with the writing, but overall I’m just sad with how the interesting concepts were wasted. It wasn't all that deep but it was very tense, exciting and unpredictable, and oddly enough how rushed the character arcs felt added to the pace. The episode wasn't explicit enough with its message. I didn't have a problem with the message it was maybe a bit on the nose the way they did it. This thread is archived. 176. I can't reconcile a toxic fallout as implication of global warming, because both of them don't go together in my head. Moderator of r/doctorwho Archived. This episode's concluding speech from the Doctor makes it so that there are multiple concurrent timelines happening simultaneously. With all one might say in criticism of this episode, I felt that Jodie is seriously hitting her stride. That's definitely ripped off from Metro. Plus, the "Fam" is finally seeing The Doctor isn't always this perfect endless ray of sunshine, can be secretive, and that life in the TARDIS isn't always fun and games. In general, per the tone, or whatever, it feels more like the older RTD episodes, and I feel like the visual effects aren't as cinematic as they used to be. A fun, campy episode with a darkly comic undertone 7/10, it made the episode feel heavily contrived as the odds of them coming across a planet which was earth, despite there being 54 others like this one that they quite easily could have landed on, was ridiculous. it was all going so well and then they did that and I burst out laughing! That's an interesting detail to notice about Ed Hime, though. 'Orphan 55' would have been really great, had the fact that it was actually planet Earth been explicit from the start, and the main plot actually directly related to the Aesop. I see the flaws and I think it'd be better if they cut the last 5 minutes (but added a line about how they couldn't go back for the mother daughter...) But I don't see why people were calling it the worst episode of new who. Press J to jump to the feed. Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts.
